Going to a party is a lot more than just driving up to the venue and having fun. Unless you’re a young man in a pub, there’s also a lot more to it than just drinking. There’s a whole subculture in the large towns around partying, and it’s something that nobody can really ignore anymore. And never mind the claims of partying going hand in hand with drugs and alcohol, that is something that, if it ever was in fashion, now fell out of it big time.
Partying, even if it’s just going to a bar and then a club, is not a lot more about glamour. It’s a common view to see young women out in a night in a town wearing chique party dresses and the men wearing tailored shirts and fancy shoes. Because going out to party is now more than just having fun, it’s a social event. That’s why most decent clubs have a dress code, which is now more important than your sex. It used to be that any guy could get into a club, as long as he was at least half decently dressed, as long as he was with a group of girls. Nowadays, it’s all about fashion and good looks.
The people to blame for this are most likely the jet set and tabloid magazines. I remember, a couple of years ago, several friends of mine were featured in one of those magazines just because they happened to be at a party. The threat of having a guy snapping pictures of you makes people want to dress up a little better.
This is an interesting way to look at it, but the real answer probably lies with what is always to be blamed with whatever happens in a club: trends. Nowadays, the trend probably is to look good, to dress up as if you’re first man or bridesmaid at your best friend’s wedding. And of course, you can’t be caught going out in the same dress twice, so better keep those dresses coming.
And who profits the most from this? Of course, the fashion industry and, more specifically, clothes stores. But the huge demand for high quality party dresses makes room for online stores to take a huge chunk of the market as well. For example, buying a dress on a website like very.co.uk might be a lot cheaper than in a store, and it only gets cheaper the more you buy.
