Privacy Policies and Online Purchases

When you surf the Internet for bargains, sales and otherwise cheap womens clothes, how often do you check the online retailers’ privacy policy? Do you know exactly how secure your information is? What about the purchase transaction itself, once you’ve found that great-looking trousers you’ve wanted for weeks?

Most online retailers understand that you don’t want your personal information, your credit card information and your purchasing habits passed from one retailer to another. They often take great pains to outline that they will keep safe your name, address and telephone number. Privacy policies also often declare that purchases—the transfer of money and its ensuing source—are kept confidential.

Search each site for a security seal, often listing as SSL Certified. That means that the data transmission is protected from being redirected or hacked and your information stolen. Don’t purchase even the least expensive scarf or leggings from an online retailer that does not offer that high level of security.

What about all those emails you receive that you didn’t ask for—the ones that started arriving about a week after your purchase or just viewing a webpage? Your purchase had nothing to do with other offers. Sometimes, “associate businesses” do get the information. That possibility is outlined in the Privacy Policy of the retailer from whom you bought those shoes. By submitting your email address, retailers consider that implied consent to receiving sales offers, which can be, in turn, leased to others.

Know the retailer’s privacy policy before you buy.
